Originally developed in the 1960s, the FSV-1 cask features stainless steel construction with a depleted uranium gamma shield and a long cavity. The smooth stainless steel outer surface permits easy decontamination after removal from a spent fuel pool. These features have contributed to the longevity of the cask.
Continued improvements to the safety and versatility of the cask have allowed for over 30 years of successful shipments. The cask continues to be used to transport a wide variety of gamma-emitting BWR wastes and non-fissile irradiated hardware. The FSV-1 currently holds USNRC CoC 9277.
